SMC Appoints New President of Seaspan Shipyards

Brian Carter is joining Seaspan Marine Corporation’s team as President – Seaspan Shipyards. Brian will assume this role full-time beginning January 9, 2012. In this role, Brian is responsible for delivering the long-term strategic plans of Seaspan’s three shipyard operations (Vancouver Drydock, Vancouver Shipyards and Victoria Shipyards).

In addition to working with Seaspan’s senior management team at both the corporate and shipyard level, one of Brian’s key areas of focus will be aligning the shipyard group for long-term success under the new $8 billion Federal Fleet Renewal Program. Brian joins Seaspan from Brizo Maritime, a consulting company he founded in 2010 to assist maritime companies with strategic development initiatives.

Brizo Maritime was hired by Seaspan last year to provide guidance on the company’s bid to win the NSPS contracts, and Brian quickly became an integral part of the winning team,” said Jonathan Whitworth, Seaspan CEO.

Prior to that, Brian worked at General Dynamics NASSCO in San Diego, CA, one of the largest military and commercial new construction shipyards in North America with over 4000 employees. During his almost ten year tenure at NASSCO, he developed more than $1B of new construction business, as well as key technology transfer relationships with leading international shipbuilding companies. Prior to NASSCO, Brian held leadership roles in several companies with vessel design and construction projects in the US, Asia, and Europe. Brian holds a Masters of Business Administration from the Rady School of Management at the University of California San Diego, a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Seattle University, and completed the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering program at the University of Washington. He also has a professional certification as an Engineer (PE), Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering.

Throughout my career, I’ve had the pleasure of crossing professional paths with Brian on many occasions and am extremely pleased he has agreed to join our company,” said Jonathan. “He is an influential maritime industry leader who possesses a proven track record for developing and implementing strategic plans and policies, and we are extremely fortunate to have Brian join our Seaspan Marine Corporation team.”
