Scientists think whale collided with vessel

Scientists from the United States are sifting through 45 tonnes of blubber and bones at the Kellys Cove wharf to try to determine how an endangered whale died off Yarmouth.

A coast guard patrol vessel spotted the dead northern right whale Sunday about 12 kilometres off the Nova Scotia coast and towed it to Kellys Cove, just south of Yarmouth.

Jerry Conway, marine mammal adviser with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, said the four-year-old female likely died after being hit by a “large vessel.”
