    Knowing the position of your AUV or ROV underwater is difficult. Ideally you would feel no difference between your GNSS position at the sea surface and a positioning source underwater. The difficulty is that GNSS does not work below the sea surface. The Nortek DVL gives you speed and direction while navigation underwater by tracking speed over the seabed both at short and at far ranges from a small instrument.  Watch the Showcase for a short explanation and two real world examples.

    Two manufacturers of underwater vehicles wanted to make a step in knowing where vehicle is at all times. Better positioning underwater would make their vehicles more efficient and increase the value to the users largely. The issue was that any existing equipment has drift over time or was far too large for the small vehicles. The solution that Nortek offers is a very small Doppler Velocity Log that outputs speed underwater accurately.     Peutz is a research consultancy with unique laboratory capabilities. Major area’s of expertise in the maritime domain are: Flow Technology, Acoustics, Underwater acoustics, Health and Safety. Peutz supports the energy transition in the maritime sector with research for sustainable ship propulsion. Wind tunnel studies and Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations are used to assess the performance of wind propulsors like Flettner rotors or (rigid) sails. The integration of the ship design and the wind propulsor turns out to be of key importance for the over-all performance of the system. Green hydrogen is regarded as a cornerstone of sustainable ship propulsion. Whether it is stored at high pressure or in cryogenic form it’s use requires a design for safety form the earliest stage. Peutz supports hydrogen developments with simulations of the dispersion of hydrogen blow-off in emergency situations. Especially the cryogenic blow-off exhibits unique physical phenomena with phase transitions of hydrogen and the components of air. Further optimisation in ship systems can be achieved with the use of data science or Artificial Intelligence applications such as: anticipating Dynamic Positioning systems, self learning controls for climate installations.
