Canan Acar

10:00 – 11:00 | Tuesday 29 November | The Roadmap of Hydrogen

Assistant Professor of Thermal Engineering

Dr. Canan Acar has a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering (2016) from Ontario Tech University. She developed complex metal hydride-based hydrogen storage for her MSc in Chemical Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology (2010).

From 2010 to 2012, she focused on energy and waste management while working as a sustainability consultant in Chicago. During her Ph.D. (2012-2016), she developed a hybrid photoelectrochemical hydrogen production system that generates heat, electricity, chlorine, and clean water. Her Ph.D. thesis received the Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Award and Governor-General of Canada’s Gold Medal for Academic Excellence. She also obtained the Outstanding Young Scientist (Turkish Academy of Sciences, 2018) and Outstanding Young Researcher (Turkish National Hydrogen Technologies Association, 2019) awards.

Her “Smart energy solutions with hydrogen options” study got the International Journal of Hydrogen Energy (IJHE)’s Zong Qiang Mao Award for the most cited paper in Hydrogen Applications (2018). So far, Dr. Acar has published about 40 international peer-reviewed journal papers, 12 book chapters, and attended 20 international conferences. She was the Track Coordinator of “Hydrogen Production: Thermochemical and Photonic Methods” during the 23rd World Hydrogen Energy Conference (June 26 and 30, 2022).
