Spanish April LNG imports down YoY

Spain’s imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) dropped 14 percent in April as compared to the same month in the year before.

LNG imports reached 10.38 terawatt hours (TWh) in April, as compared to 12.07 TWh the year before, according to the data provided by the Spanish LNG terminal operator, Enagás.

More than half of the April LNG imports came from Nigeria, followed by volumes from Qatar, Peru and Algeria.

The data shows that both conventional gas demand and gas-to-power demand fell in the month under review.

The drop in gas demand could be explained by warmer weather in Spain. The average temperature recorded during March has been 1.7ºC above that recorded during the same month in 2016.

Spain’s total natural gas imports reached 26.01 TWh last month, showing a decline of 10.3 percent from 28.99 TWh in April 2016.

Enagás’ Barcelona regasification plant received 5 out of the total 12 LNG cargoes imported into Spain during the last month.

The report shows that the Bilbao LNG import terminal received 3 cargoes while the Huelva regasification plant took two shipments during April. The Sagunto and Mugardos LNG terminals received one cargo, each.

Spain, the world’s largest re-exporter of LNG, did not ship any cargoes of previously imported LNG during the previous month.

However, there was one pipe-to-ship LNG bunkering operation by Repsol and Enagás at the Cartagena terminal that did not import any cargoes in April.
