Seaspan Invests USD 550 Million in New Containerships

Seaspan Corporation in its last financial report said that the company has placed a $550 million order with a major Asian shipbuilder for an undisclosed number of new containerships and that a series of deals will be announced over the remaining 6 months of 2013. The vessels are scheduled for delivery in 2015.

Overcapacity Remains Concern in Shipping

As the container shipping industry recuperates from a challenging market environment, concerns still abound over the looming overcapacity as more new vessels are expected to come on stream in the next two to three years.

Shipowners Face Costly New Regime over Ballast Water Management

Shipowners will soon be obliged to address new and expensive regulations to deal with ballast water. The Ballast Water Management Convention 2004 will require them to understand compliance standards, develop a ballast water management plan, select and install a treatment system and train personnel to operate the system. Their ships will be subject to surveys and inspection to maintain certification.

MV Hansa Brandenburg Safely Arrives in Port of St Louis (Mauritius)

Shipmanagement Company Leonhardt & Blumberg reported that its container vessel MV “Hansa Brandenburg” has safely berthed in the port of St Louis, Mauritius after required permission from the authorities. Currently preparations are being made to start discharging containers.

Heavy Lift Vessel ‘Happy Sky’ Starts Her Maiden Voyage

BigLift Shipping announced that on Sunday July 28th, Happy Sky started her maiden voyage from Shanghai to Cape Lambert, Australia. She is transporting three large modules – 1 x 935 mt / 1 x 818mt / 1 x 777 mt – to be installed as part of the Port B, Phase B project in Cape Lambert. This voyage is the first of four consecutive shipments.
