The Golden Pass LNG receiving and regasification terminal on the US coast of the Gulf of Mexico will become operational this year, a senior Qatar Petroleum executive said yesterday.
Giving an ‘Overview of gas development in Qatar’ at the Qatar–Latin America Investment Summit in Doha yesterday, Khalid al-Hitmi, QP manager (Gas Development) said the terminal can process up to 15.6mn tonnes of LNG annually. It will be mainly fed by gas from the Qatargas 3 project, al-Hitmi said. The Golden Pass terminal is a joint venture among Qatar Petroleum, ExxonMobil and ConocoPhillips. Al-Hitmi said Qatar has become a ‘hub of investments’ in the last 10 years since the opening up of the industry to many international companies and the private sector. “In our gas industry, we have mainly the pipeline, LNG and GTL projects,” he said. He said with the completion of the Barzan Gas Project, Qatar’s gas pipeline capacity would exceed 6,100mn standard cubic feet a day. “We have four gas pipeline projects already functional.
They are North Field Alpha, Al Khaleej Gas – 1, Dolphin and Al Khaleej Gas – 2,” al-Hitmi said. He listed Qatar’s achievements in the establishment of liquefaction facilities under Qatargas and RasGas, acquisition of ships including the mega-sized Q-Max and Q-Flex and the establishment of terminals at Milford Haven (UK) and in Venice (Italy). Al-Hitmi also touched upon Qatar’s LNG markets and said the UK was also emerging as a major receiver of the country liquefied natural gas besides Japan, South Korea, China and India among other countries.
