SMD is pleased to announce that it has been awarded the prestigious Subsea Company of the Year award at a ceremony in Aberdeen, by the industry body Subsea UK. The award, which recognises excellence in business achievement, was presented in front of more than 700 people from across the subsea sector at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre on the 9th February.
Lord Digby-Jones made a keynote speech, noting that manufacturing is “alive and well” in the UK, and that the UK subsea sector is a “global champion” for the country.
Collecting the award, CEO Andrew Hodgson said, “ I think we do have an excellent company, and we’re excellent because in the UK we have the most demanding, the most challenging, technically knowledgeable customers, and they hold us true to what we need to do… And we’ve got an absolutely brilliant set of people, that every day try to do something better than they did yesterday. ”
The award follows a successful year for SMD, which included winning a twenty-unit ROV ‘superbid’ order from Subsea 7, and manufacture of the world’s largest free stream tidal turbine for Atlantis Resources Corporation. Engineering design work also ramped up on the development of world-first deepwater mining equipment for Nautilus Minerals Inc.
SMD is based in Wallsend, near Newcastle; and has offices in Malton in North Yorkshire, Singapore, Houston, and Macae in Brazil. The company has recently reorganised itself along five key business streams: Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), Trenching, Renewables, Nuclear, and Subsea Mining. Over 2010 the business grew its headcount from 136 to 275 employees. Annual turnover increased from £43.3M in 2009 to £61.3M in 2010.
