On Tuesday 5 May 2011, the jacket for the Walney 2 offshore substation was placed, but then a period with windy weather put the operation on hold. It took 14 days before the top section could be placed on top of the jacket, but on 19 May 2011, the heavy lift barge Rambiz lifted the top section with the offshore transformer in place.

Ever since, the work on the offshore substation has focused on the preparations in order to receive the export cable. Here the cable installation vessels Stemat Spirit and Giulio Verne are close to the meeting point, where the two parts of the export cable will be joined.
