Preparation for the dredging of the navigation channel at the entrance to a West Ocean City marina has begun this week, reports The Dispatch.

This project started last year and it was designed to restore and replenish the large island north of the Route 50 Bridge known as Skimmer Island or Bird Island.

Concept of the project incorporates two main purposes. The first is clearing the entrance to the marina and the second is pumping the dredged sand onto Skimmer Island, which has eroded over the years.

The dredging is expected to be completed by April 1 however site work might continue on the island until mid-April.
