The Collier County Commission on Tuesday unanimously approved spending $2 million for the Marco Island’s South Beach renourishment project.

According to news-press.com, the project includes:

• Adding at least 77,000 cubic yards of sand;

• Extending the beach about 80 feet into the Gulf of Mexico;

• Repairing five erosion-prevention structures known as T-groins.

“It qualifies as a critically eroded area according to the state of Florida, ” Nancy Richie, city environmental specialist , said. “There are three breakwaters offshore and two jetties. They are not functioning.

“They’ve not been maintained probably since they’ve were installed ,” said Richie. “ These need to be refurbished.”

The beach in the project area should extend to the end of the jetties that sit behind Club Marco.
