Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, the Minister of Energy for the United Arad Emirates will open the OPITO Safety and Competency Conference – OSCC 2013 – which takes place in the Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel, Abu Dhabi on Tuesday 19 November 2013.

This year’s event will be the fourth annual gathering of oil and gas operators, contractors and the supply chain together with training organisations to examine how to improve standards of safety and competency that protect the workforce and the industry’s reputation.

The Energy Minister will join keynote speakers Leo Koot, managing director of TAQA Bratani and Richard Cregan, chief executive officer of Abu Dhabi Motorsports Management who will outline the parallels between improving safety in the automotive sector and the oil and gas industry. The event will be chaired by Gordon Ballard, chairman of OPITO and Schlumberger UK Limited.

In accepting the invitation to open the event, Al Mazrouei said: “The safety of people working in the energy industry is of paramount importance to us and we are ready to do all we can to promote dialogue on this important issue.”

OSCC 2013 will explore how a global approach to training standards, frameworks, qualifications and quality assurance of the training supply network add value for employers and what this means for individuals in the workplace.

OPITO, as leaders in the safety revolution and proponents of change, will outline how its products are building a safer and more competent workforce, from the North Sea to Oman, Iraq, Malaysia and beyond.

David Doig from OPITO will also give a keynote address on Leading the Charge for Change. The group chief executive of the training standards’ organisation will outline how the body is driving the industry quest for common global standards and highlight how its products are adding real value to companies and increasing employee safety performance across the globe.

Doig said: “The focus of this year’s conference is firmly on competence and will provide the audience with a detailed insight into how to build an effective competence and safety management system that is flexible in nature so it works for the business, the environment and, most importantly, helps people go to work and come home safely.

“The conference is therefore a “must attend’ event for those looking to be involved at the forefront of safety improvements in the oil and gas industry worldwide.”

Michael James Walker, Facility HSES Manager, Jebel Ali Fabrication McDermott Middle East, Inc. and Paul Groves, Managing Director, Petrofac Training Services will also present at the event along with a group of oil and gas industry experts participating in an interactive panel session. They include Khairul Azman B Yasmin, of Petronas, Norrie McVicar, from the International Transport Workers Federation and Azat Iskhakov and Vladimir Spiridonov from Lukoil.

Shell is the headline sponsor of the event which is also supported by IHRDC, SEFtec, Atlas and Gulf Technical & Safety Training Centre.

Upwards of 300 delegates from around the world are expected to attend the event.
