The Elkhart River Restoration Association has secured more than a third of the money needed to start Goshen Dam Pond dredging, reports The Elkhart Truth.

This project, which is planned to be realized in 2015, will cost about $2 million in total.

“ Once the group gets to the halfway mark of $1 million, we can start the project by getting bids for the work in place ,” said association board member Bill Rieth .

Goshen Dam Pond project should start next year, before the Indiana Department of Natural Resources permit expires.

The pond was created 158 years ago and since than plants have formed islands on the surface of the water making it difficult for boaters to move through the pond.

ERRA plans to dredge approximately 34 acres of the pond to an average depth of six feet.
