The new research vessel “Sonne” will leave the building dock I of Meyer Werft on Saturday, 05 April 2014, after 14 months of construction.

During the last few weeks this highly complex vessel was furnished with extensive equipment, underwent interior works, as well as tests of safety equipment, machinery and plant tests.

The final work and tests will be carried out in the coming weeks.

The ship is expected to arrive to Emden in May, where it will start extensive testing and sea trials in the North Sea and Baltic Sea.

The ship is 116 meters long, 20.6 meters wide and can accommodate, in addition to a 35-member crew, up to 40 scientists. The ship can also accommodate up to 25 twenty-foot containers with material on board. “Sonne” will be available for German Marine Research in early 2015.
