The Myanmar’s government is planning to dredge the mouth of the Thanlwin River to improve the navigation by deepening the estuary to accommodate the current fleet of container ships, reports Elevenmyanmar.

The private sector is also becoming an increasingly important partner in this project, since the government is not able to bear all the costs of the dredging project.

The project realisation is of great importance because the success of the planned industrial zone in Mon State is depending on it.

Thanlwin river, also known as Salween, could be used for the transport of materials to the Mawlamyine port which has suffered detrimental effects of sediment buildup in the river.
