Kincardine Offshore Windfarm Limited, KOWL, has revealed plans for, what could be, the world’s first floating wind array.

KOWL, a joint venture between Pilot Offshore Renewables and Atkins, wants to deploy eight wind turbine generators, with individual capacity no less than 6MW, on semi-submersible floating platforms near the Dog Hole off Aberdeen.

The wind farm would have a total capacity of up to 50MW.

The project does not feature an offshore substation, as the wind turbines would be connected directly to the grid at Redmoss onshore substation via two transmission lines.

The developer is hoping to secure an Agreement for Lease (AfL) under The Crown Estate Floating Foundation Demonstrator round by the end of the first half of 2014.

According to the scoping assessment, KOWL expects to start the construction in the second quarter of 2016, while the completion and commission are scheduled for late 2017.
