As part of its plan to clear the area, the Government of Guyana has commenced dredging of the shallow ranges along the Essequibo River, announced the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD).

The dredging vessel “Steve N” started working on Wednesday in the area known as Chalmers Crossing, close to Wakenaam, Leguan and Hog Island.

“ This marks the beginning of an extensive campaign by the Maritime Administration Department to dredge the shallow areas of the Essequibo River that currently impede ships operating in the area, ” stated MARAD.

Government’s ferry vessels operating between Parika and Supenaam/Wakenaam will benefit significantly from this cleanup program.
