Wave Hub, a test site off Cornwall, provides shared offshore infrastructure for the demonstration and proving of offshore renewable energy technologies.
Wave Hub test site is located 16 km off the north coast of Cornwall in South West England.
The site offers four berths for testing offshore renewable energy technology, and purpose built, pre-installed, grid connected infrastructure with a 30 MW export capacity, upgradable to 48 MW.
The site comprises fully consented testing environment with a 25 year seabed lease, with water depths ranging from 48 – 58 m.
Wave Hub is owned by the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills (BIS) UK.
As announced earlier, Wave Hub will provide a berth for the multi-device test project that will be coordinated by Fortum.
The project’s aim is to advance the use of the Penguin wave energy converter, for which the European Commission’s research and innovation programme Horizon 2020 granted EUR 17 mln.
In addition, Seatricity has announced plans to deploy another Oceanus 2 unit at Wave Hub, subject to successful extension of their berthing agreement with Wave Hub.
Simply Blue Energy, an Irish-based company, has planned activities with Wave Hub too.
Simply Blue Energy and Wave Hub have signed a contract to develop a wave farm located at Wave Hub test site. The Irish company will use Seabased wave energy technology, and the project comprised of around 200 Seabased generators is expected to be completed by early 2017.
Furthermore, an Australian wave energy developer Carnegie Wave Energy is involved in site development activities in Cornwall as part of its CETO 6 Wave Hub project.
As reported earlier, the UK government has reaffirmed its continued support to Wave Hub.
