Canadian resource company, Teck, began using LNG as fuel for six haul trucks at its Fording River steelmaking coal operation in southeast B.C.

Teck said in a statement on Wednesday it believes the use of LNG will eliminate approximately 35,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually at its steelmaking coal operations and potentially reduce fuel costs by more than $20 million annually.

FortisBC is taking part in the pilot program as a supplier of LNG to the mine site.

Under the pilot program, Teck, with further support from FortisBC, has upgraded the Fording River Operations truck maintenance shop, provided engine conversion kits, installed fuelling facilities and implemented a safety program.

The pilot, that will run until mid-2016, will provide Teck with information about the potential of using LNG across its haul truck fleet and further conversions to LNG in the future.
