China Oilfield Services Limited (COSL), an offshore oilfield service provider, has secured a contract for 3D seismic acquisition.
COSL on Friday said the survey would cover a total area of over 4,000 square kilometers in the Arctic region. The Chinese company said this “is the first great order for 3D seismic operations in Arctic waters.”
The company said it would launch the Hai Yang Shi You 720 seismic acquisition vessel for this project.
Hai Yang Shi You 720 is a streamer seismic vessel built in 2011. It is capable of towing 12 streamers for seismic exploration with each streamer being 8,000 meters in length. According to specs, it can conduct high-density seismic data collection at a maximum intensity of up to 3000 PSI.
COSL did not say who the client was, and it did not reveal the country the survey will take place in.
Info found on the Marine Traffic website shows the Hai Yang Shi You 720 was located in the Norwegian port town of Kirkenes, on the Barents Sea coast, however its position from there was last reported on April 28.
Also, it might be that the Chinese company is a bit slow with revealing its news. According to the April 27 report by Barents Observer website, the Chinese vessel’s contract started May 1, and is for a survey in the Russian sector of the Barents Sea, “most likely for Rosneft”.
