Iberdrola has opened the Operations & Maintenance (O&M) building for the 350MW Wikinger offshore wind farm in the Mukran Port.

After completion of the wind farm, the building will be used for the operation and maintenance of the 70 Adwen 5MW wind turbines and the offshore substation in the Baltic Sea.

Jürgen Blume, CEO of the Iberdrola Renovables Offshore Deutschland GmbH, said: “The opening of the O&M building is an important step towards the planed inauguration of the windfarm itself. We are proud to be the innovators in the base port of Mukran.”

The two storey building at berth 1 of the Mukran Port, built by German construction company Goldbeck, consists of office rooms where the wind farm can be monitored.

The building, which also includes several workshops and a material warehouse, will be shared with Adwen and it will become the heart of the project for all operation and maintenance tasks on the different components and equipment of the project.

Located in the Baltic Sea, approximately 75km from the mainland close to the island of Rügen, Wikinger is in the northern part of an area known as Westlich Adlergrund that the German authorities have designated as a Priority Offshore Development Area.

The wind farm will be operated for at least 25 years. In this time approximately 100 direct and indirect jobs will be created, Iberdrola said.

The wind farm is expected to be commissioned in the second half of 2017.
