Northumberland-based Renown Engineering has won the order from BAM Nuttall to manufacture watertight hatches for EDF Energy Renewables’ Blyth Offshore Demonstrator Project.

The hatches are manufactured from steel and have a design that enables them to cover the drainage plates and prevent water from entering the gravity-base foundations when they are floated out to the site, Renown said.

The 41.5MW Blyth Offshore Demonstrator will see five optimised MHI Vestas 8.3MW turbines installed in the North Sea, 5.7 kilometres off the coast of Blyth, Northumberland.

The project will incorporate a number of new and innovative features, including the self-installing gravity-base foundations and the 66Kv cable technology.

Renown Engineering is working on the project with the marine division of Renown Group, Westmoor Engineering.

Renown Engineering’s Project Manager, Jack McCusker , said: ”We are so proud to be contributing to such a significant North East project, which will make a huge difference to the region. We look forward to working closely with Westmoor to develop a high-specification, safe solution for the wind farm. Renown hopes to continue contributing to the ever-growing renewables sector.”

Construction work on the Blyth Demonstrator project has begun onshore, with offshore work due to start soon. EDF Energy Renewables owns and is overseeing the project.
