German energy company E.ON has joined ENGIE and EDP Renewables in a bid to develop a wind farm offshore Dunkirk in France.

The Dunkerque Eoliennes en Mer consortium has been forging close ties with all local stakeholders for almost two years to make this project a real example of integration and support of energy transition at the regional level, the companies said.

“We are looking forward to welcoming E.ON to Dunkerque Eoliennes en Mer. We are working closely with all local players, with whom ENGIE has maintained trusting relationships over several decades,” said Gwénaëlle Huet , CEO of ENGIE France Renewables.

With 20 years’ combined experience in offshore wind, the members of the Dunkerque Eoliennes en Mer consortium are committed to the operation or development of 19 offshore wind projects with a capacity of more than 5,600MW, the consortium said.

“E.ON is pleased to bring the Dunkerque Eoliennes en Mer consortium nearly 20 years of experience in offshore wind in 4 European countries. Our international experience in this field is an asset for this major project,” said Sven Utermöhlen , Chief Operating Officer E.ON Climate and Renewables.

The Dunkerque Eoliennes en Mer consortium is one of the 10 bidders pre-selected by Commission de régulation de l’énergie (CRE) to compete in France’s Round 3 offshore wind tender.

“E.ON’s arrival in the Dunkerque Eoliennes en Mer consortium reinforces the technical excellence of our project. Together, EDPR, ENGIE and E.ON bring the best of European offshore wind to the Dunkerque project,” said Spyridon Martinis, Chief Development Officer & Chief Operating Officer Offshore of EDP Renewables.

According to France’s Multiannual Energy Programme (Programmation pluriannuelle de l’énergie (PPE)), the Dunkirk offshore wind tender is scheduled for this year, with 500MW of capacity offered and the expected strike price of below EUR 70/MWh.
