U.S.-based NOV has received an order for what is said to be the industry’s first electric subsea crane.

NOV reported that its Lifting & Handling group had sold the first electric subsea crane to a company in Europe at the end of 2023.

“We are excited about the market’s response to our electric subsea crane and are proud to have received the first order. By combining our well-proven electric drive technology with our deep expertise, we have developed a crane that will set a new standard in the subsea sector,” said Robin Sporsheim , Senior Director at NOV Lifting & Handling.

According to NOV, the crane’s enhanced efficiency reduces vessel emissions when compared to hydraulic cranes. The new design allows the recovery of potential energy from loads as they are lowered to the seabed, facilitating onboard utilization or storage.

The electric system eliminates reliance on hydraulic fluid for most components, decreasing the risk of spills, reducing noise, and minimizing the environmental impact.

Although hydraulic technology persists for luffing cylinders for its specific benefits, NOV has adopted an advanced electric motor system to enhance control and precision.

This approach improves operational smoothness, reduces downtime, and secures the crane’s reliability. Additionally, the modular design and components facilitate maintenance, resulting in lower operating expenses, the company said.
