AES Andres LNG terminal to offer trans-shipment, bunkering

AES Dominicana, a unit of AES Corporation, said it has launched LNG trans-shipment and bunkering services for the Caribbean, Central and South America.

In order to develop these new businesses, AES has brought in an expert in the industry, George Nemeth, a professional with more than a dozen years’ experience working for ExxonMobil, Merrill Lynch Commodities and Koch Supply and Trading, the company informed in a statement.

Nemeth said, “Work has begun to re-configure the existing AES Andres LNG receiving terminal in the Dominican Republic for LNG reloads onto vessels between 10,000 cbm-60,000 cbm.”

He added that the new business will allow for cost-effective gas conversion solutions for smaller load fuel consumers in the region.

“The facility is also located along many shipping routes ideally positioned to provide LNG bunkering services to vessel owners and operators who are increasingly drawn to LNG as a propulsion fuel,” concluded Nemeth.

The AES Andres LNG terminal is scheduled to be ready for reload operations in the third quarter 2016. Current developments for vessel bunkering infrastructure are also underway.

In 2014, AES received 17 standard-sized cargos of LNG for electricity generation and truck distribution in the Dominican Republic.

The use of LNG instead of burning liquid fuel allows the Dominican Republic to save around 600 million US$ annually and to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 300,000 tons per year.
