Floating regas solution gains ground: ECOnnect scores double pre-FEED win on LNG import projects

Project & Tenders

Norway’s technology company ECOnnect Energy has picked up two preliminary front-end engineering design (pre-FEED) deals for its modular regasification (regas) solution, said to be designed for faster delivery and be more cost-efficient than traditional floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) or new onshore terminals.

While interpreting its two recently inked pre-FEED contracts with undisclosed LNG players as an acceleration of the adoption of jettyless, modular regasification, ECOnnect Energy claims that these assignments will enable it to further develop its IQuay regas terminal solution, which consists of a floating storage unit (FSU), a modular floating regas platform (R-Class), ship mooring and subsea or floating pipelines to shore for transfer of high-pressure gas.

Morten Christophersen, CEO of ECOnnect Energy, commented: “These studies highlight the value and flexibility of the IQuay solutions in addressing key industry challenges. We are excited to collaborate with our clients on exploring how the IQuay regas terminal can drive both sustainability and operational excellence.”

ECOnnect Energy was in charge of delivering a jettyless ready IQuay solution for the offshore jetty of the Wilhelmshaven 2 terminal in Germany. While disclosing more information about the first study, it has now secured, and the benefits of using this solution, the firm claims that its offering can secure gas supply quickly and strengthen energy security, as it can be deployed in under 20 months.

As a result, the solution is perceived to allow companies to bypass the long lead times and availability constraints of traditional options, with a design that accounts for demanding offshore conditions, incorporating advanced mooring and safety systems to ensure reliability in a challenging marine environment.

According to the Norwegian firm, the second pre-FEED study focuses on a site with more benign marine conditions but strict permitting boundaries and an ambitious timeline for first gas; thus, the IQuay regas terminal’s floating, modular configuration is expected to minimize onshore footprint and civil works, enabling compliance with existing concessions while accelerating project execution.

“Its compatibility with an FSU, without major modifications, further reduces capital costs and technical risk. Coupled with scalable regas capacity and established supplier partnerships, the solution positions the project to deliver reliable LNG imports on schedule and within regulatory constraints,” emphasized ECOnnect.

The company underlines that global regasification capacity currently falls short of demand, as limited specialized shipyard availability leads to long lead times for new FSRUs, while converting FSUs remains costly, with many projects also having gas supply requirements too small to justify conventional terminal solutions.

Such scenarios are seen as the main reason why project developers are turning to ECOnnect Energy for fast-track floating and modular regasification systems, which offer rapid availability and economic viability for small to mid-scale projects, enabling facilities that would otherwise be unfeasible due to the time or cost associated with full-sized FSRUs or converted FSUs.

The Norwegian firm outlined: “Designed with a focus on sensitive marine environments, the system maintains an environmental footprint lower than its alternatives while ensuring robust performance and operational reliability.

“Its modularity allows for future reconfiguration to accommodate renewable energy integration or carbon capture and storage (CCS) capabilities. The system can also be scaled up to meet changing capacity needs over its lifetime.”
