Denmark’s Maersk Tankers held a naming ceremony for its newest tanker at Samsung Heavy Industries’ (SHI) Ningbo shipyard in China on July 24.

The vessel was officially named Maersk Crete. It is the company’s 17th medium range 2 (MR2) newbuilding.

The company is currently undertaking a 19-vessel fleet renewal program in the MR2 segment. The tankers are built by SHI and Sungdong Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering.

The 52,914 cbm Maersk Crete features a length of 183 meters and is Singapore-flagged. It is the third Samsung-built MR2 to be delivered to Maersk Tankers this year.

Another two units from the batch remain to be delivered, according to VesselsValue data, one in 2019 and one in 2020.
