Meyer Werft Bags First Newbuild Order from Saga Cruises

British based cruise line Saga Cruises and German shipbuilder Meyer Werft have signed a memorandum of agreement for the delivery of a new cruise vessel in summer 2019 and the option to order a second for delivery in 2021.

The 55,900 GT vessel will be approx. 234 metres long, 30.8 metres wide and with a planned completion date of summer 2019.

“Carrying less than 1000 passengers, it will retain the intimacy and personal service for which we are renowned. There will also be single-sitting dining in a choice of specialty restaurants, a selection of bars, indoor and outdoor pools, a spa, fabulous library, signature Britannia Lounge and much more – all with a fresh and contemporary twist on the traditions of classic Saga cruising,” Saga Cruises said announcing the new ship.

With this project Meyer Werft’s building dock I, which is presently used for block construction, will be reactivated. Therefore in 2019, Meyer Werft will deliver three new cruise ships to clients instead of the currently planned two ships.

“We are very happy and proud to deliver the first new build for this British cruise line. Currently operating two vessels and with a long-standing tradition, the cruise line is very successful in its market segment,” said Bernard Meyer, Managing Partner of Meyer Werft.

Meyer Werft said that the the announcement comes on the back of intense negotiations and many years of cooperation, along with the decision to reactivate building dock I.

Robin Shaw, Chief Executive of Saga Cruises, said: “This is an important milestone in the future of Saga Cruises. We are happy to develop this vessel, tailored to our individual needs, and we’re delighted to be working with Meyer Werft a recognised leader in cruise ship construction. “

Saga specialises in services for people over the age of 50. In addition to cruises and holidays Saga also provides insurance, health services and financial services. The company has two ships in its fleet, those being Saga Sapphire and Saga Pearl II.
