Port of Rotterdam offers discount for vessels bunkering LNG

Port of Rotterdam informed on Wednesday that seagoing vessels bunkering liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the port will receive a 10 percent discount on gross seaport dues.

About 1.5 million euros has been reserved by the Port of Rotterdam Authority for the scheme that will apply until 2020, according to the port’s statement.

In addition to the new incentive, the port authority will support the Environmental Ship Index and the Green Award by providing 1.5 to 2 million euros in incentives.

It also intends to spur LNG bunkering in support of the shipping sector and firms like Shell and Gate that advocate the use of LNG.

Shell recently began the construction of its LNG bunkering vessel at STX Offshore & Shipbuilding and signed a deal with Containerships of Finland. Under the agreement, Shell will provide LNG as fuel to Containerships’ two 1.400 TEU container ships when its bunker vessel becomes operational in mid-2017.
