The Union cabinet has approved the Sethusamudram ship canal project, which was conceived about 150 years ago. The project many not be as important as the Suez Canal or the Panama Canal, but it will definitely change the Indian navigation scenario. Described by commentators as the Suez of the East, the new canal will reduce the travel time for ships moving from the east coast to the west coast by almost a day.
