Recently, Shanghai Maritime University (SMU) achieved the first contract signed for the self-developed project naming “the technology and equipment of the ballast water treatment system for new type ships”, with the contract amount of 3.8 million Yuan (RMB).

After signed a cooperation agreement, Jiujiang Precision Measuring Technology Research Institute would put it into production as soon as possible. For it comes into market, the problems, such as the marine environment pollution and biological invasion occurred by the discharge of ship’s ballast water, could be solved effectively.

As reported, it is the first case in the world that the photo-catalysis combination technology was applied in this project, with the characteristic of complete sterilization, higher reaction rate, small size, low power consumption, high efficiency and low operation cost, complying with the new technology of low cost in the market prospect and no usage of chemicals. Compared to technology of ultraviolet sterilization, chemicals, electrolysis and etc, the defection could be overcome by the photo-catalysis combination technology.

The reaction rate of this equipment is 2 to 3 times that of the Sweden’s ballast water treatment with common photo-catalysis technology. It is reported, SMU’s project, naming “the technology and equipment of the ballast water treatment for new type ships”, has already applied for and been authorized five relevant invention patents in total.

(3.8 million Chinese yuan = 595 714.6 U.S. dollars)
