Just in case you didn’t recognise the vessel from the sleek lines of her hull and bulbous bow, the ship’s company have obliged with a giant banner. The sailors clambered down to the bottom of the dry dock at Rosyth to ceremonially sign a ‘partnering charter’ to guide the Devonport-based frigate through her 11-month refit.

Portland’s now about six months through that revamp – a £20m upgrade of her sensors and weapons, plus machinery, living spaces and the like.

The partnering charter between the ship, defence firm Babcock and the MoD’s Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) organisation is committed to delivering Portland to an enhanced material state, on time and within budget.

“ It is hugely important to create an environment based on respect, trust and fairness, which promotes open and honest communication, ” said Lt Cdr Teilo Elliot-Smith, Portland’s Senior Naval Officer . “ Operating within a culture where people take ownership and actively work together to identify and solve problems early can only be of benefit to HMS Portland’s refit. I am delighted to be a part of this project and look forward to seeing HMS Portland back at sea. ”

HMS Portland is due to return to Devonport before Christmas and will formally be accepted back into the Fleet by the beginning of March next year.
