Crown Princess Mary of Denmark has named the second Triple-E vessel Majestic Maersk amid a sea of fans and spectators.

The Majestic Mærsk is the second in Maersk Line’s fleet of 20 Triple-E vessels, and it has made a unique visit to the Danish capital this week. Copenhagen is not a major container port, and in regular service the vessel will instead serve nearby Aarhus and Gothenburg.

Called the ‘Triple-E’ class for the three main purposes behind their creation — economy of scale, energy efficiency and higher degree of eco-friendliness — the ships set a new industry benchmark for size and fuel efficiency.

At four-hundred metres long, 59 metres wide and 73 metres high, the 18,000 TEU (twenty-foot container) capacity of the ‘Triple-E’ is 16 percent greater (2,500 containers) than today’s largest container vessel.
