According to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), the incident occurred in the evening hours in Indonesian waters after the ferry left the Nongsapura ferry terminal for Singapore.

At the time of the incident the ferry was carrying a total of 97 passengers, including 51 Singaporeans and 7 crew members.
