The United States Coast Guard medevaced a 31-year-old crew member of the Barcelona Knutsen liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier some 13 miles south of Oahu, Hawaii, while on its way to Japan.
On Saturday a helicopter aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point delivered the LNG carrier’s crewmember to the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, according to the U.S. Department of Defence’s information distributor DVIDS.
Medevac request was sent out on Thursday from the vessel’s master following injuries the crewmember sustained to his face while conducting maintenance on a fire extinguisher. The vessel was approximately 575 miles south of the Big Island at the time of the request.
The Norwegian operator Knutsen OAS Shipping-owned Barcelona Knutsen picked up a cargo at the Peruvian LNG export facility on December 30 and set course for Japan.
The vessel built by the South Korean shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) in 2010 is capable of transporting 173,000 cubic meters of the chilled fuel and is currently on its way in the North Pacific, east of Honolulu.
