Japanese-based company Miura has received the United States Coast Guard (USCG) type approval certificate for its ballast water management system (BWMS).
As informed, this is the 23rd type approval certificate issued by the USCG’s Marine Safety Center.
Granted on October 28, 2019, the certificate follows a detailed review of the manufacturer’s type approval application which determined the system met the necessary requirements. Miura submitted its application in April this year.
Specifically, the treatment principle of the Miura HK-(E)C consists of filtration with UV treatment at uptake and discharge. This approval covers models with maximum intake treatment rated capacities between 160 m 3 /h and 900 m 3 /h.
Earlier this month, South Korean Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) also obtained the USCG type approval for its EcoBallast system which consists of filtration with UV treatment during uptake and discharge.
The International Maritime Organization’s Ballast Water Management Convention entered into force in September 2017. The measure aims to protect the marine environment from invasive species carried in ships’ ballast water. On the other hand, the United States constituted an original stringent ballast water management regulations. Ships calling the United States ports are required to install BWMS with USCG type approval.
