Norway's TMC Compressors has been selected for the delivery of a compressed air system for a floating production, storage and offloading vessel (FPSO) that is currently being upgraded in China before deployment offshore Brazil for its third phase of life.

The Maromba FPSO, formerly known as FPSO Polvo, is undergoing upgrades at COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Dalian) for oil & gas operator BW Energy. Upon completion, the 340.6-meter-long FPSO will be deployed on the Maromba field in the Campos basin.

TMC will supply a high-capacity marine compressed air system, including service and control air compressors, air dryers, filters and control system. The value of the contract has not been disclosed.

According to the Oslo-headquartered firm, the compressor is designed in a way that allows the on-board crew to maintain the it themselves, without an external service technician.

“We actually delivered the marine compressed to the FPSO Polvo 20 years ago, so it is a huge compliment that they return to us to support this upgrade. The FPSO Maromba requires more modern and energy-efficient technologies with slightly higher capacity. We look forward to delivering this,” said Hans-Petter Tanum, TMC's Director of sales and business development.

The FPSO's hull began life as a trading tanker before its first conversion into an FPSO for the Polvo field in Brazil in 2007.

A final investment decision (FID) for the Maromba field development was reached in May 2025, targeting 500 million barrels of oil in place. This project is designed to include an integrated drilling and wellhead platform (WHP) and the refurbished FPSO.

First oil from the Brazilian project is scheduled for the end of 2027. BW Energy anticipates a plateau production of 60,000 barrels of oil per day.
