The Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP), a joint venture of BP, Equinor and TotalEnergies, has completed an appraisal program offshore the UK exploring carbon storage capacity.

Together with extensive geophysical surveys, environmental assessments and offshore studies across both license areas CS006 and CS007 in the Southern North Sea, the completion of two appraisal wells, C43/30 – 2 (BC39-1) and C44/27-3 (BC37-1), has improved understanding of important geological formations deep beneath the seabed and their suitability for long-term CO2 storage.

The results will be used to inform future planning, permitting and environmental assessments and lay foundations for the next phase of development.

According to NEP, the work will also build the knowledge and confidence needed to support industrial decarbonization, attract investment and help create the infrastructure required for a low-carbon future.

“The successful completion of the C44/27-3 (BC37-1) appraisal well marks the culmination of a significant programme of work across the CS006 and CS007 storage licences. Together with the positive results from C43/30 (BC39-1), the acquisition of new seismic data and the completion of our offshore survey campaigns, we have established a strong technical foundation for the next phase of project development," said Rich Denny, Managing Director of Northern Endurance Partnership.

“These activities demonstrate continued progress in developing the infrastructure needed to support industrial decarbonisation across the Humber and Teesside regions. The knowledge gained through this programme will help us assess the full potential of these storage sites and support future expansion of the UK’s carbon capture and storage network.”

NEP will continue evaluating and characterizing the sites through 2026 and 2027. After concept selection, the project will begin the front-end engineering design (FEED) phase in 2027, followed by a final investment decision (FID) in 2028.
