Técnicas Reunidas tasked with work for second phase of Canadian natural gas pipeline

Project & Tenders

LNG Canada, a joint venture between Shell, Petronas, PetroChina, Mitsubishi Corporation, and KOGAS, has awarded engineering company Técnicas Reunidas with a contract for front-end engineering design (FEED) services for Phase 2 of Coastal GasLink, located in British Columbia, on Canada’s west coast, adding to earlier work the Spanish firm performed for the project.

Owned and operated by TC Energy and its partners, the 670-kilometer-long Coastal GasLink Pipeline transports natural gas to the LNG Canada facility near Kitimat. Phase 2 refers to the development of compressor stations, which would double the pipeline’s capacity without requiring additional pipeline to move natural gas.

LNG Canada is working with Coastal GasLink under an integrated commercial model to advance Phase 2 planning. Phase 2 will include the construction and operation of five additional compressor stations with compression turbines of 30 MW, as well as modifications to both existing and planned facilities at various points along the pipeline route.

TR Canada E&C has been tasked with providing FEED work to support planning for this potential second phase. The Spanish firm’s scope includes the initial engineering and project design, along with the assessment of the potential project costs and scope for the facilities work, intended to support the technical analysis as LNG Canada continues to explore pathways to a potential final investment decision (FID).

The award of this contract follows the work previously performed by Técnicas Reunidas in an earlier project phase, where it provided consulting and engineering services.

“This award is part of the reinforcement of Técnicas Reunidas’ presence in North America—one of the main pillars of its Strategic Plan—and comes just a few weeks after the company secured a major design engineering services contract for a natural gas liquefaction and export plant on the Texas Gulf Coast,” Técnicas Reunidas said.
