Containerships may get EU funding for LNG-powered ships

Finnish shipping company Containerships said its four planned short sea LNG-powered vessels have been recommended for European funding.

The outcome of the co-funding from the European Union will be confirmed during autumn this year, Containerships said in its second-quarter report issued last week.

The agreements for the building of the first four LNG-powered vessels have been signed, but are still subject to final approval of the stakeholders in this project, Containerships said.

Containerships and Germany’s Nordic Hamburg signed a deal for four 1,400 TEU dual-fuel container ships to be built by China’s Huangpu Wenchong Shipyard with an option for four additional vessels.

If everything goes according to plans, the four LNG-powered vessels are expected to be delivered during 2018, with the first vessel scheduled for delivery in early 2018.
