India: PSA’s Chennai International Terminals Receives New Cranes

Chennai International Terminals Pvt Ltd (CITPL), owned and managed by PSA International, received four new ship-to-shore quay cranes (QCs) and eight new rubber tyre gantry cranes (RTGCs) at Chennai Port on 02 April 2012.

The four Post Panamax QCs are capable of lifting two 20-foot containers per move. They will allow CITPL to continue delivering high productivity services to the shipping customers. All the new cranes will undergo commissioning tests and will be progressively deployed for operations from May 2012.

Mr V Sivarajan, Managing Director of PSA India, said, “With these new additions, CITPL will have a total of seven QCs and 18 RTGCs and more than double its existing terminal handling capacity. This capacity boost will enhance the growth of container traffic and reaffirms CITPL’s commitment to deliver quality services to the trade and shipping community in South India.”

“The growing market in Chennai is in need of more cargo handling capacity and greater terminal productivity. We have been calling at PSA’s Chennai International Terminals and are delighted to see the addition of these new state-of-the-art cranes which will ensure faster turnaround of the vessels and benefit the industry,” said Capt. Mr Raghu Sankar, Chairman of Shipping Committee of Southern India Chamber of Commerce & Industry commented, “Chennai is a growing market for EXIM Trade. To meet the ever increasing trade demand, it is necessary that the port’s cargo handling capability is enhanced. It is good news to the trade & industry to see this new addition of equipment in PSA’s Chennai International Terminals.”
