MANTEO – Somewhere in the midpoint between war and politics, Luther Daniels spent a memorable chapter in his long life as the chief engineer on the nation’s first and only nuclear-powered commercial ship.

The Savannah, built in 1959 and retired in 1972, was recently towed from the James River Reserve Fleet to Colonna’s Shipyard in Norfolk for maintenance. The U.S. Maritime Administration plans to preserve the ship and eventually donate it to be used as a museum at a yet-to-be-chosen port city.
