South Korean HJ Shipbuilding & Construction (HJSC) has obtained approval in principle (AiP) from the classification society Lloyd’s Register (LR) for the design concept of an 88,000 cbm next-generation eco-friendly very large ammonia carrier (VLAC).
LR verified the design’s suitability, structural safety and compliance with international regulations, HJSC said, adding that, through this concept design approval, the company plans to actively respond to the growing demand in the decarbonized ship market.
“With the future commercialization of ammonia-fueled propulsion engines for ships, the company is preparing for increased order demands by planning the further development of ammonia-powered carriers,” the company noted.
Yoo Sang-cheol, CEO of HJSC, commented: “Through ongoing research and development of decarbonized ships, including carbon capture and storage technology, hydrogen vessels, and liquefied CO2 carriers, we will secure our technological expertise and continue to lead the eco-friendly ship market.”
As disclosed, the shipbuilder signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with LR in July 2024 to jointly develop the VLAC and has since devoted nearly six months to intensive research and development.
Ammonia, a clean alternative fuel with zero carbon dioxide emissions, is gaining attention as a suitable ship fuel for a carbon-free future, alongside hydrogen. An increase in orders for vessels using ammonia as a primary fuel is expected in the coming years.
As for HJSC’s other activities, in late 2024, the company signed a contract with a European shipowner to build four 7,900 TEU methanol-ready containerships. The vessels will be built at the Yeongdo Shipyard in Busan and are set to be delivered progressively starting in 2026.
This deal mirrors a similar contract the shipbuilder entered in June with another European client for four 7,900 TEU containerships. Construction of these vessels will also take place at the Yeongdo Shipyard, with deliveries set to commence in 2026.
