China Merchants Energy Shipping (CMES), a shipping company under China Merchants Group, and the inspection, certification, ship classification, and engineering consultancy group RINA have joined forces to accelerate the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), smart shipping technologies, and decarbonization solutions across global maritime operations.
China Merchants Energy Shipping and RINA’s newly signed memorandum of understanding (MoU) establishes a framework for strategic cooperation across maritime safety, digitalization, operational excellence, and emerging shipping technologies.
This agreement creates a platform for long-term collaboration, enabling the two organizations to combine their expertise and explore opportunities that support innovation and the evolving needs of the maritime sector, expanding on the duo’s existing relationship.
The MoU enables CMES and RINA to look into initiatives related to fleet safety and risk management, carbon emissions management and regulatory compliance, digitalization and data-driven vessel operations, as well as the application of artificial intelligence to areas such as predictive maintenance, energy efficiency and operational decision-making.
The agreement also entails the study of alternative fuels, alongside smart shipping technologies, automation, and other innovations relevant to the future development of the maritime industry.
In addition, it will promote technical exchange, research activities, and knowledge sharing, with the aim of supporting operational excellence and helping both organizations navigate a rapidly evolving regulatory and technological landscape.
CMES Shipping operates and manages more than 380 vessels, with a total deadweight tonnage exceeding 55 million tons, ranking among the top in the world in terms of fleet capacity.
Recently, RINA also inked two MoUs with Thailand’s PTT Public Company Limited (PTT) to enhance innovation and decarbonization across the energy and maritime sectors.
