96 Sewol Compensation Claims Approved

South Korea’s Compensation Review Committee has approved compensation for 96 claims related to the last year’s Sewol ferry sinking in which 304 out of 476 passengers and crew had lost their lives, the country’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries reports.

At the time of the accident, the ferry was carrying 325 high school students, 75 of whom survived the sinking.

The court awarded the families of the 19 deceased students an overall compensation of KRW 7.86 billion (USD 6.9 million). Two survivors were awarded KRW 100 million in damages.

The court also approved 38 compensations to cargo loss claimants, awarding KRW 300 million for lost vehicles, and KRW 1.57 billion for other cargo.

37 fishermen who reported losses were awarded KRW 20 million.
