WinGD, Doosan ready first Wartsila X62DF engine

Winterthur Gas & Diesel and Doosan Engine held a demonstration of the first low-speed low-pressure Wärtsilä 6-cylinder dual fuel engine for commercial application Changwon, Korea.

The engine that is currently undergoing testing at Doosan will be delivered in pair to Samsung Heavy Industries where it will be installed on the first of two 180,000 cbm LNG carriers for SK Shipping and Marubeni, WinGD said in a statement.

The newbuilds will operate on a long-term charter to France’s Total signed in 2013 and will be used to transport liquefied natural gas from Ichthys LNG project in Australia and Sabine Pass LNG project in the USA.

Besides technical features, WinGD and Doosan Engine claim the engine enables a 15 to 20 percent reduction in capital expenditure as well as additional operating expenditure savings for LNG carriers that can now go without the high-pressure gas compression system external to the engine.

The first engine using the WinGD’s X-DF technology has completed the classification society type approval testing, Winterthur Gas & Diesel said.
