Indonesia: BPMIGAS, BP Organize Public Consultation for Tangguh LNG

Indonesia’s Upstream Oil and Gas Executive Agency (BPMIGAS) and contractor BP Berau Ltd. conducted on Wednesday public consultation on the environment impact analysis (AMDAL) for the Tangguh LNG development project.

The consultation took place at Wintder Tuare Building of Fakfak Regent’s office, and opened by second assistant of Fakfak regional secretary, Abraham Sopaheluwakan.

Abraham appreciated the public consultation, confirming the local government’s support for the effort as it could bring positive impacts to the region’s development.

“The parameter of success of one region’s development is seen from the successful preparation of human resources, considering that a reliable workforce has the ability to manage natural resources and face future challenges,” Abraham said.

According to BP Berau Ltd.’s Tangguh Environmental Team Leader, Dewanti Oktantina, the public consultation aimed at accommodating inputs, opinions and comments from the public in relation to activities planned by BP Berau Ltd., so they will comply with existing regulations.

Dewanti explained that the consultation would be continued to the district and village levels at the Fakfak Regency and the Teluk Bintuni Regency, as well as to Manokwari in West Papua Province. The process would then be followed up to the Ministry of Environment.

The Tangguh LNG development project is endorsed by the central government as part of its efforts to reach the national oil and gas productions target, as stipulated in the Presidential Instruction No. 02/2012 on the enhancement of national petroleum productions. In realizing this national target, supports from local governments and the public are therefore needed, so the activities could run as planned. The Public Consultation, in this matter, serves as an ideal platform for exchanging ideas, so the planned activities could contribute positively to the development of the region and its people. In addition, the consultation is needed for ensuring the compliance of the project’s environmental management with the existing rules and regulations.
