Shell Joins NGVA Europe

Shell has joined NGVA Europe, the Natural & bio Gas Vehicle Association.

The company is a major player in the global energy market, with its business activities including exploration and production, refining, distribution and marketing as well as petrochemicals, biofuels and trading.

Referring to Shell joining NGVA Europe, Lauran Wetemans, General Manager Downstream-LNG said: “Shell’s decision to join NGVA Europe is recognition that Natural gas can be a viable option for fuelling cleaner and more sustainable transportation. We are excited to play a stronger role in the European dialogue about LNG as an emerging fuel for road transport and ships.”

To meet the world’s future energy demand, all forms of energy will be needed, including developing more Natural gas reserves, Shell is convinced. The enterprise is one of the world’s largest suppliers of natural gas, and believes that natural gas will play an increasingly important role in the global energy mix.

Shell believes that a range of different vehicles and fuel options will be necessary to help meet the growing demand for transport, and that liquefied natural gas could form a bigger part of the transport energy mix. While different markets will vary in terms of their choices, LNG is now a quality transport fuel option for road transport and ships as well as rail and mining. Shell is also looking at options to increase LNG use in its own operations.

The company is working closely with customers, partners, governments and Original equipment manufacturer (OEMs) to provide customers with a cost competitive fuel. In 2013, an agreement has been signed with Travel Centers of America LLC to develop a US network of LNG Fuel stations for heavy duty road transport sectors. The first LNG fuel station resulting from this agreement was opened in May 2014. The acquisition of Gasnor, the Norwegian company which provides LNG fuel for ships and industrial customers, and the launch of the world’s first 100-per cent LNG-powered barge to carry goods along Europe’s River Rhine are further examples of Shell’s confidence in liquefied natural gas as a fuel option.
