Bakker Sliedrecht to Power Up GeoSea’s Orion

Bakker Sliedrecht will deliver the main electrical power package for the offshore wind installation vessel Orion, scheduled to be delivered to its owner GeoSea in 2019. The vessel will be deployed on next-generation projects featuring massive components.

Bakker Sliedrecht is in charge of the engineering, delivery, and commissioning of the main electrical power package for the DP3 vessel, which will have a total installed electrical power of 44,180kW.

Orion will be equipped with the new ABB ACS 880 liquid-cooled low voltage multidrive system. The system has a very high power density, yielding a lot of power out of a small footprint, according to Bakker Sliedrecht, who added that ABB ACS 880 is maintenance-friendly and already compliant with future regulations.

GeoSea’s mother company DEME placed an order for the 216.5m DP3 installation vessel with COSCO shipyard in China at the beginning of last year.

Orion will be equipped with a high-tech crane with lifting capacity of 3,000t at more than 50m. The loads can be lifted to a height of more than 170m. Deck space has been maximised to provide high transport and load capacity.

The vessel will be capable of accommodating a crew of up to 131 people.
