Block Island OWF Transmission Cable Will Not Run through Narragansett, USA

Providence-based offshore wind energy developer has withdrawn its application to run a transmission cable through the Town of Narragansett, writes the Providence Journal.

Namely, Deepwater Wind planned to place the electric cable from the Block Island wind farm, made of 5 wind turbines, to the Block Island before landing on the mainland at Narragansett Town Beach.

This proposal faced great opposition from the Narragansett residents.

In a statement released on Monday, Deepwater CEO Jeffrey Grybowski said: “We’re continuing to explore alternative routes for the cable that will connect Block Island to the mainland, and we remain confident we’ll find a suitable location. While we believed that Narragansett Town Beach was a good option, it was never the only location we considered. We plan to bury the cable beneath existing roadways, with little to no impact on the general public.”

After the company defines new plans for the cable route, Grybowski said that they will make them public.
